Papers of Dwight Foster, Massachusetts congressman, senator, and jurist, include family letters of his father Jedediah, chief justice of the Superior Court of Massachusetts, his brothers Theodore, senator from Rhode Island, and Peregrine, a stockholder in the Ohio Company and land speculator in Virginia and Ohio. Correspondence includes letters from Theodore and Dwight Foster describing their lives at Brown University, politics, and their allegiance to the Federal Party; and letters from Dwight Foster to his daughters Pamela and Sophia. Also, papers concerning the town of Brookfield, Mass., of which Dwight Foster was a selectman, and papers relating to cases that Jedediah and Dwight Foster adjudicated in the Massachusetts courts. Other correspondents include Joseph Allen, Moses Brown Jr., Theodore Dwight, Abigail Foster, and Foster's grand-nephew, Dwight Foster.

Joseph Allen (1749-1827) was the son of James Allen, a Boston merchant, and Mary Adams Allen, a sister of Samuel Adams. In 1770 he opened a store in Leicester, Mass., and in 1776 he succeeded Levi Lincoln as clerk of the courts, an office he held until 1810. In 1810 he was chosen to the 11th Congress to fill an unexpired term but he declined re-election. He was one of the founders of Leicester Academy.
